Shockingly low availability, no subs, a hot morning, and a welcoming party of 36 touring Brits waiting for us at the ground gave me that sinking feeling. We've had more beatings this year than babicka's pork shnitzel. Were we about to notch up another one? The team that fought tremendously hard in the previous game against Latinos, deserved another chance this weekend. But it wasn't to be. Nevertheless it gave me a chance to try out a few different combibnations - Martinez in central midfield, Chalieux getting a chance to kick lumps out of the opposition's shins at right back, myself at centre back hoping to make amends for my disappointing last appearance there against Zizkov, Adam "my respect for midfielders has gone way up" Wein making his first ever start in midfield, and Till "bertie vogts" Janzer at left back. Things worked out great in the end. We were two fairly evenly matched teams - what with their excesses the previous night balancing the scales. Defence held firm despite their attempts to release players over the top at the start, including the only real class player, who was playing up front. Chalieux got stuck in when things seemed to get tight along the sides, Wein and Janzer linked up well on the left, and Bart "total football" Burgmans and Dennis "Jablko" Appel did what they do best. Well, anyway we scored first. The move of the game in the 10th minute. Zhmako got the ball in midfield and traveled with it to the 30 yd line where he passed off to Martinez who feinted to the right and shot low to the base of the left post. 1-0. The asshole of a ref (my ref supplier got the message afterwards that we won't require that particular ref again - it was a first for me at least to hear a ref tell a player to "fuck off" in the course of a game - no it wasn't to me in case you're wondering) arrived just after that and we had to contend with his assinine decisions for the rest of the game. One of them was the contentious decision to allow a goal stand even though we called it offside. I mean there were four of them on the ball, 5 metres beyond our offside line. Surely they weren't all on? No chance for Polishchuk. 1-1 We resumed our lead before the end of the half with Wein going down the left on a lung bursting run. He swept it back to Zhmako who sidestepped into the box and let fly. 2-1. Janzer even had a lovely chance inside the box soon after only to blast over with his good leg. Second half, the momentum left us and Brereton really took the game to us. It was all a blur to me but seemd to consist of Polishchuk making an amazing one handed stop at the feet of an attacker, Janzer diving in to block a sure goal, midfield and our forwards missing a mountain of opportunities including an open goal for Zhmako, our back line heading, volleying and intercepting non-stop. Finally however goal 3 arrived after a pass back to their goalie. Tigerish Martinez moved in on the keeper, causing him to hesitate. When he eventually did pass, Martinez intercepted, and after a struggle with the defender shot onto the right upright. The ball whizzed accross goal onto the left post, and crossed the line. 3-1. We were then bombarded for the remainder of the game by an increasingly desperate Brereton, but we held on. 3-1. Satisfying.
