CHAMPIONS!! Match report: Mark Child Partisan went into the penultimate match of their expat league campaign knowing a point would be enough to secure the title. We were of course aiming for more than just a point. Cosmos were an enigma wed trounced them in the autumn, but done the same in the first season and then suffered a surprise defeat in the return leg. So nothing taken for granted rightly so, it turned out. Partisan had more of the ball in the first half hour, but could not make their possession count, with Cosmos defending in numbers. The best chance of the period came when the ball was crossed in from the right along the floor to Khaliq, who somehow contrived to spoon it over from 6 yards out. A rare miss from our usually lethal hitman. Our opponents also showed their danger on the break, with a couple of fast counter-attacks. First subs on the half-hour: Gisler on for Chaudhary; Janzer for Fitzgerald; and Caliskaner up font with Guri dropping to centre-mid and Sheppard to the bench. The changes soon had an impact as Caliskaner received a pass about 18 yards out in the left channel, took a touch, and shot across goal into the far corner. Good crisp finish. Cosmos also made a change, bringing a pacy little aussie on at left wing, who immediately started causing problems down the flank. He had Cosmos best chance of the half with a diagonal run in to hit a first time volley that was heading for postage-stamp top-left-corner before Lillard pulled off a frankly outrageous save to tip it outside the diagonal. Half Time: Partisan 1 - 0 Cosmos The second half was more back and forth, with Cosmos sensing they were still in with a chance and pushing for an equaliser. They got one as well, as a throughball released one of their midfielders down the right channel. He managed to outmuscle Gisler on the edge of the box and as Lillard rushed out to cover the cosmonaut chipped it over him and into the far corner. 1-1 The tension suddenly went up a notch, but fortunately we were able to muster an almost instant response. Guri was sent away down the right channel and after beating a defender or two, struck an excellent rising shot from a very tight angle that restored our one-goal advantage. 2-1 The next round of Partisan subs came on the hour, Child going off to let Chaudhary back on, Maceska out for Fitzgerald, and Sheppard back on in place of Ross. It was a nervy final period, with one flare-up on the right wing ending in a yellow card for Guri, and a header from a Cosmos corner in the final minute that Lillard saved on the line, but in the end we were able to close out the game as winners and head back to the dressing room to crack open some bubbly. A great campaign for Partisan!
