Game 1 of a Prague expats mini championship. We got off to a losing start, but the quality of our football deserved a better result, and on another day it would have. In my last game for Partisan for a while spanning a career ofand so on, etc .. Actually it has been fun playing in the last few games. The quality of play, communication, and commitment from team mates has never been better. Its great to see Partisan moving away from long high passes into the ozone layer to playing football closer to terra firma. In the first half we had all the ball, helped by the fact that we were able to hold the ball up front and not allow Zizkov turn our aging defence with balls in over the top. Benson had a couple of easy chances set up by Guri, but Benson tends towards the spectacular goals rather than the routine tap in. Central midfield was controlling the game for Partisan. Then we were caught cold in one of our blind panics that we seem to have once every game. We started to play ping pong in our own box, and Zizkov's bespectacled midfielder, said thank you very much, had a shot from 20 yards, and finished very nicely in the bottom corner. 0-1. We pressed on and made some lovely play, again with Guri causing havoc after Johnson and Sheppard made the gaps. But Zizkov hit us with 2 more goals on the break, finished to absolute perfection. You can't make plans for goals that are executed that well. No-one really at fault. 0-3 half time Burgmans, Lillard and Zhmako came on with Shepherd moving up front with Zhmako. Klopko, Guri and Benson were taken off. The changes had an immediate effect. Shepherd unlocked the defence for Johnson to run through and coolly finish. 1-3 and we were back in the match. Unfortunately, we hardly made any chances after that, and Zizkov started to put the ball in over our defence. Basically we were leaving gaps because we were chasing another goal. Zizkov hit us on the break for 2 more goals. 1-5. we got a consolation from a headed goal by Benson from a corner. Anyhow as I wrote before we played the better football, just don't have the killer instinct just yet. Other mentions to Patel and Alexander who were tremendous in defence, Sablack who was his usual mix of hard work and trickery, and Sheppard and Johnson who ran the show. Best of luck for 2008!
